Masilonyana Municipality to answer questions on prepaid electricity

Masilonyana Municipality to answer questions on prepaid electricity | News Article

Winburg - Masilonyana Municipal officials will appear before the Free State Legislature's Portfolio Committee for Local Government and Traditional Affairs to answer questions regarding the installation of prepaid electricity in households.

This follows after a group of more than 100 Winburg residents sought legal advice in an effort to address service delivery problems at the municipality.

Spokesperson for the group, Theo Kalaka, says they have exhausted all possible avenues in trying to get the municipality to install prepaid electricity. Residents want meters as they claim the municipality is over-charging them for electricity.

He says they sent numerous letters to the Free State Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, the office of Free State Premier Ace Magashule and the presidential hotline. A petition was also registered at the provincial legislature.

ANC Chief Whip, Neels van Rooyen, said he is aware of the petition and its register. He said the municipality will be requested to appear before the committee to give their side of a story and final recommendations will be made to the house for adoption.

OFM News sent detailed questions to the municipality, but did not receive any response.
