Aircraft accident investigators and a contingent of security were dispatched to the site where an Oryx helicopter of the South African Air Force (SAAF) crash-landed on the Worcester side of the Huguenot Tunnel near Cape Town yesterday.

They had to secure the wreckage and commence with an investigation. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says in a media statement no fatalities or serious injuries were reported. A crew on board, consisting of a pilot, co-pilot, a flight engineer and four aircraft technicians and mechanics, was sent to assist a training team in the area of Touwsriver, near Worcester. They completed their assignment and returned back to Air Force Base Ysterplaat when the accident took place. According to the SANDF, the pilot complained of back pain and was taken by ambulance to 2 Military Hospital in Cape Town.

Meanwhile, ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, says ER24 paramedics, along with several other services, arrived on the scene to find a large helicopter lying across the entire highway. Debris from the helicopter was spread across the scene.

Traffic authorities began to close off the road and divert traffic while paramedics began to assess the patients.

According to him, one of the crew members had sustained serious injuries while seven others had sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Paramedics treated the patients and provided the seriously injured with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
