Welkom - Production at Sparta Foods in Welkom is expected to resume today after a pipe burst late on Friday afternoon releasing toxic ammonia fumes.
Sparta’s spokesperson Niel Venter says employees were safely evacuated and some were transported to hospital.
According to him only two employees are still being treated for toxic fume inhalation in the St. Helena Private Hospital in the city.
He says the situation is under control and some affected employees are still recovering at home.
OFM News broke the news at the weekend that about 300 onsite employees were evacuated while more than 60 employees where transported to various hospitals in the city.
Venter says contaminated meat products were loaded onto sealed trucks and will be safely disposed of after they were exposed to toxic fumes.
