Judgment over acquittal of FS officer delayed─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:58 Tue, 30 Mar 2021
Judgment on the acquittal of the Goedemoed prison officer accused of conspiracy to murder a fellow female officer, Nomsa Stuurman, will be handed down on Wednesday at the Free State High Court.
This after Judge Pitso Molitsoane on Tuesday asked for the postponement of the judgment.
The accused officer, Mojalefa Letele, is on trial for conspiracy to murder Stuurman in March 2019 and wants all charges against him to be dropped. He was arrested in February 2020 following a joint investigation by the South African Police Services (SAPS) and the Department of Correctional Services (DSC) following the gruesome murder of Stuurman and the rape of another female officer.
Stuurman was killed by an inmate, Jongikhaya Samsam, and in his testimony in 2020, Samsam detailed how the accused mastermind, Letele, placed a hammer for him on top of a steel cabinet in the corridors.
Letele was previously suspended and is out on R10 000 bail.
Meanwhile, Samsam was slapped with double life sentences by the High Court in October 2019 for killing Stuurman and for raping and holding her colleague hostage. He previously implicated Letele and said he was promised R100 000, a pair of sneakers and favours to make his life easier, in case he was arrested for the murder.
