#CoronavirusFS: Education honours fallen teachers | News Article

About 40 Teachers succumbed to Covid-19 related complications in the Free State.

This is according to the provincial Department of Education. In commemoration of these fallen heroes and heroines, the department will hold an event at the Fidel Castro Building on Monday.

Head of the department, Tsoarelo Malakoane, in a statement highlights the best way to honour the memories of those who lost their lives due to the pandemic is to adhere to all Covid-19 regulations.

Malakoane's statement comes just days after Health Minister Zweli Mkhize earlier this week confirmed the country has officially entered the second wave of infections, with the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng being the key drivers of the spreading virus.

The minister appealed to all South Africans to enjoy the festive season with restraint.

Mkhize further flagged teenagers as those who account for most infections in SA's Covid-19 second wave.

In light of this, Malakoane appealed to learners to comply with all Covid-19 protocol, to be extra cautious this festive season and to avoid large gatherings.

Following the 16 days of activism against women and children abuse that was commemorated from November 25 to December 10, the department also confirms that its senior managers will sign a pledge committing themselves to fight against gender based violence.
