Sasolburg - The streets of Sasolburg are calm as dusk falls over the northern Free State town.
Police spokesperson Peter Kareli says although the streets are calm for now, criminals are taking advantage of the situation by still openly robbing local shops. He says shop owners have been asked to put away their stock to prevent further losses.
Kareli says the more than 150 arrested protesters will most likely appear in the town's magistrate's court tomorrow or Wednesday on charges of public violence.
Police reinforcement were brought in from Gauteng and Welkom this afternoon. Three police members were wounded in the clashes with thousands of protesters. They took to the streets due to unhappiness about a proposed merger between the Metsimaholo- and Ngwathe municipalities.
