Kepler Wessels: "Turbulant times in SA Cricket"

───   07:23 Tue, 13 Mar 2012

Former Proteas captain lashed out in his column, Sports Talk on www.supersport.co.za last night on the problems CSA are facing currently and that he hopes they sort it out soonmer rather than later to enable them to seriously look at the migration of good Souith African players. Wessels wrote:

"Unfortunately we face a turbulent time in South African cricket off the pitch at present. It is likely with all the difficulties facing the CSA board at present that cricket itself probably won't be top of the agenda for a while. When the current problems are sorted out at board level it is essential that the board address the migration to other countries of local players."

"The fact that Kruger van Wyk made his debut for New Zealand against South Africa last week is a major concern. I am very pleased for Van Wyk that he got an opportunity to play international cricket. He is a lovely little guy and a true professional. He has always maximised his ability. He deserves his opportunity on the international stage even at the mature age of 32. I for one hope that there is a lot more to come for him".

"Van Wyk played for Northern Transvaal when the provincial system was in place. He was a solid performer for them. He lost his spot because first AB de Villiers came into the squad and then Heino Kuhn. The reality is that Van Wyk may not be good enough to play for South Africa on a regular basis. He is however more than good enough to have commanded a regular place in one of the franchise teams. There are so many players across the world who are in a similar position. These players represent other first-class teams in different countries with distinction and would make a good contribution to our domestic system. They will broaden the depth and enhance the standard".

"Players leave South Africa because they don't get opportunities for different reasons. There is a move afoot now to increase the provincial system to a twelve-team format. This would be the ideal opportunity for CSA, player agents and the players' association to make a list of these players plying their trade overseas and entice them back into the South African domestic structure. Most of them would comfortably command a place in the different South African domestic teams. To argue that we don't need these players is both arrogant, immature and short-sighted".

"Just imagine how the New Age Impi, the new team that has been introduced into the T20 domestic competition, could have benefitted from these players. One has to feel for the sponsor of the Impi. They came in with the best of intentions to create a seventh competitive team in the South African system.
Unfortunately the selection of this team has let down the sponsor. The procurement of very average overseas players and the selection policy followed by those responsible for the team has let down the sponsors. The players who have left our shores would have performed a lot better than some of the overpaid professionals who were recruited by people who didn't do their homework".

"It is time to launch a drive to get those South African players who campaign overseas, back home. This is why a twelve-team system, divided into two groups of six with promotion/relegation applying, will be a good idea. In this country we need to nurture and develop all the talent we have if we want to be the best in the world on a consistent basis.
Let's hope that CSA sort out the current issues that they face so that cricket gets back to the top of the agenda. Let's also hope that bringing our foreign players back becomes a priority".
