We take a walk down memory lane to look at some big achievements made on this day...

I take a walk with you down memory lane as we look at some astonishing achievements made on this day in music history:

  • In 1960, Elvis Presley started a five week run at the number 1 positions on the US singles and UK singles charts with ‘It’s Now or Never’. The song which was based on the Italian song, ‘O Sole Mio’, gave Presley his first post-army number 1.

  • Michael Jackson had his third UK number 1 with the single ‘I Just Can’t Stop Loving You’, a duet with Siedah Garret in 1987. It was originally intended to be a duet between Michael Jackson and either Barbra Streisand or Whitney Houston. Session singer Siedah Garret also worked with Madonna.

  • Boyz II Men, in 1992, started a 13 week run at number 1 on the US singles chart with ‘End Of The Road’, which also was the group’s first US number 1. Taken from the Eddie Murphy film ‘Boomerang’, it broke the 36-year-old record held by Elvis for the longest run at number 1. What a thing!

  • In 1998, Boyzone scored their fourth UK number 1 single with ‘No Matter What’, making them the first Irish group to have four number 1 singles. Boyzone also because the first act in history to reach the Top 5 with their first 12 single releases. The song came from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical ‘Whistle Down The Wind’.

  • U2’s first UK gig on their current tour in 2009 broke the attendance record for Wembley Stadium concert. Over 88, 000 people attended the show.

Also, let us not forget the birthdays of some great artists:

  • Mike Graham, vocals for Boyzone, who have had 21 UK hit singles, was born today in 1972.
  • In 1984, David Welsh, guitarist for The Fray, was born.
  • And last but not the least, American singer, actor, and one of three brothers, Joe Jonas, celebrates his birthday today.
