Mamelodi Sundowns secure an impressive 12th consecutive win─── KAYLA BARKER 16:40 Sun, 22 Jan 2023
In a record setting 12th consecutive win for Mamelodi Sundowns, the Brazilians defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, the 21st of January.
In one of four PSL games played over the weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns set a historic record by securing a 12th straight one, 1 more than that of their own 2006/7 teams record of 11 straight wins when the team was under the guidance of PSL legend Gordon Igesund.
Sundown’s have extended their lead on the log to a whopping 17 points above the second placed Richards Bay FC which have played two less games than they have.
The first half saw plenty of missed shots at goal but it was Mamelodi Sundowns’ Neo Maema who opened the game with a goal in the 20th minute. Pushing through the Amakhosi’s press secured the Brazilians a winning goal. Chiefs did not, however, go without chances but unfortunately couldn’t get past Williams.
For Kaizer Chiefs, this loss makes for a third straight defeat for the year leaving them at 6th on the log with 24 points. In turn, Downs' coach Rhulani Mokwena modestly stated that the AmaKhosi weren’t bad in performance even though the results did not go their way.
The rest of the weekend’s results saw Golden Arrows lose 0-1 to Maritzburg United, a one all draw between Royal AM and Chippa United as well as between AmaZulu and Marumo Gallants.
The PSL action continues on Sunday 22 January with two matches: Orlando Pirates at home to Stellenbosch FC and Richards Bay visiting SuperSport United.
