Cape Town City FC will be targeting their first ever MTN8 title this week when they take on SuperSport United in the final of Saturday.

The Moses Mabidha Stadium in Durban will host the final this season.

Should Benni McCarthy’s Citizens win the title this weekend they will become only the second team from the Mother City to win the knockout tournament after Ajax Cape Town claimed the honours two years ago.

It will also be the side from Cape Town’s second piece of silverware after previously beating the very same SuperSport United in the final of the Telkom Knockout Cup. This title came in the clubs first season under the Cape Town City FC banner after their renaming from Black Aces and move from Nelspruit.

The club has received somewhat of a boost for their week of preparation by being granted permission to train on their home ground, the Cape Town Stadium.

Coach McCarthy said it helps being able to train at the stadium where Siphiwe Tshabalala scored South Africa’s first goal during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“I really must thank the City of Cape Town for giving us a platform to work.

“It’s always difficult for us to train at the stadium, but because we’re in the final, they have allowed us to train and use their facilities on a more regular basis.”

SuperSport United has won the tournament just once, when they were crowned the 2004 champions.

A win for Matsatsantsa a Pitori will mean that the club has won their third piece of silverware in three seasons.

Saturday evening’s final in Durban kicks off at 19:00.
