“He advised her to resign from her work so that after cashing out her pension money, she could pump it into a business they would run as partners.”

A 50-year-old foreign national was arrested in Mbombela on Sunday (8/10) on theft charges under pretences and contravention of the Immigration Act.

Christopher Masereka, also known as Moses Mawaza, made his first court appearance on Tuesday (10/10). He was remanded in custody until his formal bail hearing on 20 October at the Magistrate’s Court in Mbombela.

He allegedly scammed a 46-year-old former teacher out of her pension savings.

“The victim and the suspect reportedly entered into a serious relationship in March. A few months later, Masereka informed her he worked in logistics.

“He advised her to resign from her work so that after cashing out her pension savings, she could pump it into a business they would run as partners,” said police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala.

The accused scam artist then played hard to get, didn't return the victim's calls, changed his address and phone number, and eventually disappeared.

The woman realised she had been scammed and opened a case of theft under pretences with the police.

Community members who may have been victimised similarly are urged by the police to come forward.
