Paul Roos victorious in the rain against Grey College─── ILSE SMALBERGER 16:51 Sat, 17 Aug 2024
“It is fair to say that nothing went Grey’s way on the day, but not through lack of trying.”
Paul Roos thumped Grey College in Stellenbosch in an interschools match on Saturday afternoon, beating the boys from Bloemfontein by 36–3.
Grey College struggled to convert possession into points in wet, cold and windy conditions. They admittedly drew first blood when full-back Heinz Stockenstrom slotted a penalty, but could not score any points from then on, despite having several chances.
Paul Roos scored their first try eight minutes into the match, courtesy of hooker Altus Rabe. Joshua Dampies made no mistake with the boot and the hosts were in front within the first 10 minutes of the game.
Paul Roos went on to score two more tries – Sameul Badenhorst and Matthew Kleyn scored for the hosts and Dampies converted Badenhorst’s try to take the boys in maroon into half-time with a lead of 19–3.
It is fair to say that nothing went Grey’s way on the day, but not through lack of trying. Poor discipline cost them dearly though, with Dampies putting another penalty through the posts early in the second half and Grey conceding a penalty try in the 47th minute, which also cost them a yellow card.

Conditions stayed tricky and having to play into the wind in the second half was never going to be easy for the visitors. Paul Roos rubbed salt in the wound with Player of the Match Charl Holwill going over for another try with three minutes to go.
With this match, Paul Roos cemented an excellent unbeaten season, while this was only Grey College’s second defeat of the season.
