The Golden Lions XV overcame a spirited Cheetahs side win narrowly on the final day of the Academy Week.

The Welpies beat the Cheetahs 31 – 30, after being 17 points down at the break.

The Lions’ blindside flanker, Sam Bruwer, was the stand-out player for his team, scoring a hat-trick of tries.  Joshua Shannon scored the fourth try for the Lions XV. Full-back Inda Gusha delivered with the boot, slotting a penalty and converting all four of the Lions XV tries.

The Cheetahs scored three tries in the game, courtesy of Marinus Oosthuizen, Renier Grobler and Tristan Maree. Fly-half Jan-Hendrik van der Linden performed his kicking duties extremely well, converting all three tries and scoring three penalties.

Earlier in the week, the Cheetahs only had one victory in their three matches, but will no doubt take heart from a inspired performance in their final game on Friday.

In other games, the South-Western Districts (SWD) and Limpopo Blue Bulls made history, with both putting up three figure scores in their final matches – SWD beating Border Country Districts by 106 – 10 and the Limpopo Blue Bulls taking down LSEN XV 106 – 7.

Boland, Leopards, Valke and Griquas were also in action on Friday.  Boland beat the Leopards by 38 – 12 and the Valke were victorious against Griquas with 53 points to 21.
