Western Province has been crowned unofficial Craven Week 2024 champions for the fifth time in a row. They beat the Free State 37 – 24 in the final match of the competition.
Western Province scored five tries – by Adeeb Boraine, Sameul Badenhorst, Quintin Potgieter, Freek de Kock and Torren February. Yaqheen Achmed was successful with three conversions and two penalties.
For the Free State, Ethan Adams, Liam van Wyk and Siyabonga scored behind the line, with full-back Heinz Stockenström converting all three tries and kicking over a penalty.
Central South Africa, however, triumphed in other ways. Stockenström ended the tournament as the leading points-scorer with 45 points in total. His team-mate, fly-half Alzeadon Felix was named Player of the Tournament. Griquas full-back Gregan Jansen topped the try-scoring table with 5 tries.
In the day’s other matches, the Golden Lions narrowly beat Southwestern Districts by 45 – 40, with Lions hooker and captain, Siphosethu Mnebelele named Forward of the Tournament.
The Pumas ended their tournament undefeated with a 27 – 22 win over WP XV. Boland also came out on top when they beat Eastern Province 35 – 27. Other winners on the day were the Leopards (43 – 39 against Limpopo Blue Buls), Valke (30 – 24 against Griquas), Border (16 – 10 against the Griffons) and Sharks (26 – 19 against the Bulls).
