Cheetahs confirm the signing of former Stormer─── MORGAN PIEK 07:37 Thu, 04 May 2023
The Toyota Cheetahs have confirmed the signing of the former Stormers and Western Province flyhalf, Abner van Reenen.
The 24-year-old Van Reenen currently plies his trade at the Italian club Rovigo Delta where plays under the former Springbok coach, Allister Coetzee.
A couple of seasons ago it was said that Van Reenen was set to be the Stormers solution at flyhalf in the franchise, battling with a consistent backline general.
The Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, told OFM Sport that the player will be joining them.
“We've signed Abner van Reenen and he has previously played for Western Province and the Stormers,” said Fourie.
“He then went to Rovigo where he played in Italy for two seasons. We've signed him from 1 July, then he will join us at the Cheetahs.”
Van Reenen will have massive boots to fill at the Cheetahs as he is set to replace Siya Masuku who will be heading to the Sharks.
It is also believed the Varsity Cup-winning North West University Eagles hooker Vernon Paulo will be heading to the Cheetahs. The University of the Free State Shimlas centre, Jooste Nel, is also ready, training with the team and his big ball-carrying ability will certainly be an asset.
