Stormers take charge over the Lions, winning their URC clash─── KAYLA BARKER 07:14 Sun, 30 Oct 2022
The Stormers played against the Lions in a URC Clash on Saturday, the 29th of October. After needing to come back from a deficit that saw the Lions leading 22-10 at half time, the Stormers dominated the second half and secured a 22-31 victory.
The Lions have built up a good amount of momentum in the last few weeks and looking at the first half of the game, their momentum was playing in their favour. Having been off to a good start with Henco van Wyk making an early statement and maintaining territory control in the first half, a win was within close reach for the Lions.
The Stormers, however, were five Springbok players down which put them slightly understrength but the team still showed up and proved the value of their reserves. Earlier this week Stormers Head Coach John Dobson mentioned that although there were players unavailable, he was pleased with the strength of the squad set to play.
With Manie Libbok and Sacha Mngomezulu receiving their maiden call-ups to the Springbok squad and set to play in the end-of-year tour it was only fitting that they showed up on the field this evening. Libbok claimed man of the match after a stellar performance claiming 4 conversions for the side. Being set up by Libbok, Mngomezulu started the team's second half comeback by scoring a try in the 54th minute of the game. After a great run, Clayton Blommetjies scored a try in the 68th minute followed by a conversion by Libbok which put the Stormers in the lead.
Nama Xaba also showed up and secured the teams 4th try in the 74th minute of the game furthering their victory.
Today in the URC, the Bulls will take on the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld and this game is set to kick off at 16:00.
