On Wednesday afternoon, the 6th of October, Emerging Ireland took on the defending Currie Cup Champions, the Pumas, in Bloemfontein in a friendly match that forms part of the Toyota Challenge and bagged yet another win on tour.
The Emerging Irish beat the Griquas 54-7 in Bloemfontein in their first match on tour.
Wednesday evening’s game saw them victorious over the Pumas with a 28-24 win. As much as their first win was comfortable, the win did not come without challenge.
Chay Mullins broke the ice with the first try of the game, followed by another from the 19-year-old James Culhane. The third try by Jake Flannery was scored in the 17th minute of the game claiming a 21-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes.
Following this 21-0 lead, the Pumas fought hard to catch up ultimately leading to a rather close call. Half time saw the scoreboard standing at a 21-12 lead to Emerging Ireland.
Andre Fouche scored the first try for the Pumas, while centre, Sebastiaan de Klerk scored twice. The hooker, Eduan Swart, also managed to score a try. The captain, Tinus de Beer, landed two conversions for the side.
Emerging Ireland will face the Toyota Cheetahs on Sunday afternoon at 15:00 at the Toyota Stadium.
