The Toyota Cheetahs loose-forward, Aidon Davis, received some good news in this trying time for sport.
The former SA Schools player and Junior Springbok received a clean bill of health after he was diagnosed with a rare B-cell Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer two-years ago.
Davis went for his bi-annual check-up on Wednesday and was informed that the results were all clean.
Davis joined the Cheetahs from Bayonne in 2018 but spent much of the time side-lined after breaking both his tibia and fibula during a freak training ground accident in February last year.
Davis told OFM Sport that he is very grateful for the good news, especially in these uncertain times.
“In September 2018 I was diagnosed with a rare B-cell Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer. Luckily the doctors caught it early and I underwent three weeks of radiation treatment.
“After that, I was back in training with the team. Then in February 2019, I broke my leg in training, just before I was supposed to go on tour with the team to Europe in the PRO14.
“I missed most of the 2019 season, including the Currie Cup. I started playing in the new PRO14 season, then the Coronavirus brought everything to a standstill.
“Regarding my cancer, after my treatment, I went to check-ups every six months.
“Today’s (Wednesday) check-up, two years after I was diagnosed, everything is fine and the doctors are happy.
“In these uncertain times and not being able to play rugby, I got very good news and I am very happy about that.”
Davis is still in training with the Cheetahs as they prepare for the 2020 Currie Cup, which is expected to start in mid-September. For now, all eight franchises in South Africa are waiting for the ministry of sport to give the green-light for contact training to resume.
