The Bloemfontein-based Marumo Gallants staged a remarkable turnaround on Saturday afternoon, securing a 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in a thrilling Premier Soccer League clash at Soccer City.

Trailing to an early goal, Gallants displayed resilience and quality, with strikes from Trevor Mathiane and Daniel Msendami sealing a vital three points.

The win extends Gallants' unbeaten league streak to an impressive five matches and propels them to 10th place in the standings. This result provides a significant six-point buffer above the relegation playoff zone, offering them much-needed breathing room as the season progresses.

For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat compounds their recent struggles, stretching their winless run in the league to six games. While they remain in eighth position, the chasing pack, including Gallants themselves, Chippa United, Golden Arrows, and Magesi FC, are closing in, intensifying the battle for a coveted top-half finish.

Despite Gallants' early dominance in terms of tempo, it was Chiefs who drew first blood against the run of play. In the 10th minute, Makabi Lilepo showcased his attacking prowess, cutting in from the left flank before unleashing a powerful shot from range. The effort took a slight deflection off Vusi Sibiya, deceiving goalkeeper Washington Arubi and nestling into the corner of the net.

Undeterred by the setback, Gallants maintained their composure and continued to exhibit greater cohesion and attacking intent. They posed a consistent threat to the Chiefs' defense, although clear-cut chances were initially scarce, leaving goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma relatively untroubled for a large portion of the first half.

However, the complexion of Bvuma's afternoon shifted dramatically in the 41st minute. A fierce drive from Msendami was parried by the Chiefs' shot-stopper, only for the ball to fall directly into the path of defender Trevor Mathiane. Mathiane's subsequent, albeit tame, shot found its way into the back of the net, restoring parity for Gallants just before the halftime whistle.

Both teams opted for tactical adjustments at the interval. Chiefs introduced Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, while Gallants bolstered their midfield with the introduction of Phathutshedzo Nange.

Ngcobo almost made an immediate impact for Chiefs, setting up Wandile Duba for a golden opportunity just after the hour mark. Duba's shot beat the outstretched arms of Arubi but agonizingly struck the upright. The rebound then ricocheted off Ashley du Preez and rolled harmlessly out for a goal kick.

That missed chance proved costly for the home side as Gallants seized the lead in the 70th minute. Msendami, who had been a constant menace, delivered a curling free-kick from the left flank. The ball evaded everyone in the crowded penalty area, bouncing awkwardly into the top corner past a helpless Bvuma, sending the Gallants' bench into jubilation.

‘Arubi produced a superb save’

Chiefs desperately pushed for a late equalizer, and their best opportunity fell to substitute Edson Castillo in the 88th minute. His powerful header looked destined for the net, but Arubi produced a superb save, tipping the ball over the bar to preserve Gallants' hard-fought lead.

Gallants next game will be on Saturday (17/5) against Chippa United at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.
