“For the first time ever, there were no Free State teams in the semifinals, and another first for KwaZulu-Natal having two teams in the semis.”

The Fairtree Super12 Hockey Tournament has produced a new trophy winner from outside the Free State.

Previously second-ranked Rhenish Girls’ High from Stellenbosch went home Saturday with a 3-1 shootout win against St Mary’s Kloof in the final round to secure the top-ranked spot in the country.

“Rhenish become the fourth school to win the tournament since its inception nine years ago. Both Rhenish (1st) and Waterkloof (4th) had their best Super 12 to date,” said Oranje Secondary School Communications and Marketing Manager, Ruan Bruwer.

The final standings have changed to:

1. Rhenish; 7. St Stithians;

2. St Mary’s Kloof; 8. Oranje;

3. Durban Girls’ College; 9. Bloemhof;

4. Waterkloof; 10. Garsfontein;

5. Paarl Gim; 11. St Anne’s;

6. Eunice; 12. Menlopark.

For the first time, there were no Free State teams in the semifinals and another first for KwaZulu-Natal was having two teams in the semis.

St Mary’s Kloof also displayed excellence even after losing in the finals by taking four out of six certificates at the individual awards ceremony.

“St. Mary’s Kloof has reached their third Super12 final. The others being in 2018 and 2019.”

Although the team lost in the final, the six victories they received were the most victories ever recorded during the tournament.

This was the third time St Mary’s Kloof lost in the tournament final. The final of 2018 against Menlopark was also a shootout.
