The North-West University (NWU) and the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have teamed up to tackle food security issues.

The collaboration will see the official launch of the Agri-Hub programme on NWU’s Mahikeng campus on Monday (3/3). It aims to equip emerging farmers with skills and knowledge to establish sustainable and competitive agricultural enterprises.

NWU communications manager Oscar Mosiane highlighted the significance of the Agri-Hub as a platform for young agripreneurs. It will provide them with both technical expertise and business acumen, essential for thriving in the agricultural sector.

Agripreneurs better positioned

“Through hands-on training and exposure to modern farming techniques, young agripreneurs will be better positioned to integrate into the broader agricultural value chain,” Mosiane stated.

“Beyond training, Agri-Hub acts as a catalyst for research, innovation, commercialisation and rural development, bridging the gap between primary producers, students, and the agribusiness sector.”

Agri-Hub is designed to merge science and business, offering real-world solutions to the pressing challenges facing the agricultural industry and the economy at large. Mosiane emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships in the programme’s design. Agri-Hub will drive agribusiness innovation, foster industry networking, and create value-added opportunities within the sector.

Mosiane mentioned the initiative’s focus on agricultural diversification, food sovereignty, and sustainable development goals (SDGs). It’s expected to have a significant impact on both the provincial economy and agricultural output.

The official launch of Agri-Hub will be attended by key figures, including North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi, Agriculture MEC Madoda Sambatha, and NWU Vice Chancellor Prof. Mzumbanzi Bismark.
