#Eclipse: Blood moon a-risin' in Central South Africa | News Article

Tonight there will be a blood moon on the rise, and people in the Southern Hemisphere will see the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century.

At 22:21 (twenty-one minutes past ten o'clock), the moon will be shadowed by Earth. The eclipse will last about 1 hour, 43 minutes and 35 seconds. There are clear skies in the forecast for North West and the Free State, however, the Northern Cape will experience patches of cloud which could limit the viewing experience.

However, skies will only have 20 - 30% cloud coverage, so the moon should still be visible. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon line up perfectly. When the moon is fully in the Earth’s shadow, it turns red which is where the nickname Blood Moon comes from. So make sure to look up tonight to see the blood moon a-rising.
