Political analyst calls for #ANC voting reform─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 16:00 Mon, 18 Dec 2017
The ANC’s electoral system should be changed as it is a process that is vulnerable to exploitation.
This, according to political analyst, Vukani Mde, during a special OFM News panel discussion of the 54th ANC Electoral Conference today.
The electoral process depends on branches from all over the country to collectively choose representatives. These delegates then vote for the next party president at the national conference, according to branch mandates.
According to Mde, this leaves the process open to manipulation, bribery, and gatekeeping. This means that about 3000 representatives vote on behalf of close to one million members.
According to Mde, the electoral system is problematic. “It is problematic first and foremost, for the fact that it does not allow ANC members to enjoy their right to choose their own leadership as ANC members under the principle of one person, one vote,” said Mde.
