One of the water tanks located on the roof of the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein has cracked, resulting in a steady flow of water flowing into the building today.

Free State Health Department spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, says the water tanks are quite big and carry about 20 000 litres of water. He says the water is steadily flowing from the third down to the first floor, but maintains the ground floor is unaffected.

Mvambi says contractors are attending to the crack in one of the tanks, while cleaners are clearing the water on the affected floors. The spokesperson stresses that services are“running as usual and patient care is not compromised”. EFF Councillor Baba Sebolao tweeted a video that shows the wet floors at the hospital, partly covered in towels and what appears to be sheets. He says all the wards at the hospital have been affected since last night. The spokesperson on the other hand says the "leakage is kept under control so as to not affect other parts of the hospital".

The Department is reportedly working on rehabilitating the aging hospital, which is over 100 years old. The Department says there will be upgrades, maintenance and revitalisation to the hospital, to improve the quality of the building.
