The deputy minister of Correctional Services is expected to conduct a raid at the Grootvlei Prison in Bloemfontein in the Free State on Friday.
Minister Thabang Makwetla’s visit is to clamp down on the contraband inside the prison cells. His visit follows a day after one he undertook at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre where contraband such as cell phones, weapons and drugs were confiscated.
The surprise search is part of Correctional Services’ aim to clean up the centre before Christmas.
The search will be conducted by the Emergency Support Team, EST, and SAPS in conducting.
