FS department to visit Matjhabeng municipality─── CATHY DLODLO 19:00 Thu, 15 Nov 2018
The Free State Cooperative Governance department is going to send a team to Matjhabeng Municipality – that includes Welkom – to see how best it can intervene.
This is according to the Head of the department, Mokete Duma.
He said in an interview with OFM News that the team will do an assessment of the situation after a violent strike by municipal workers has entered its second day.
Earlier reports indicated that damage done to property during the strike already stands at R200 000. The workers took to the street to complain about their third party payments, such as medical aid and pension fund contributions, that are being deducted from their salaries but not paid over.
Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, said earlier damage was done at the municipal offices in the city’s Central Business District (CBD). He said the main entrance to the offices, furniture, glass and other delicate valuables on the premises were damaged. Thakeng says no arrests have been made so far.
