Moqhaka Municipality picking up pieces─── 15:08 Tue, 25 Sep 2018
The Moqhaka Local Municipality that includes Kroonstad is expected to submit a report to convince the Free State Provincial Government to declare the affected area a disaster area after several families were left destitute.
Municipal spokesperson, Dika Kheswa, tells OFM News this follows the state of the damage caused by the devastating winds this past weekend. At least 200 buildings - including schools, churches, and homes - were affected. He says residents who were left stranded on Saturday night have been relocated to temporary shelters. Kheswa says the various provincial departments such as Social Development, Human Settlements, and Public Works are hard at work trying to alleviate the extent of damage caused by the winds.
“We are treating all these issues as a matter of urgency. There are food parcels from Social Development because challenges are different. There are those who are able to rebuild and those who are not.
There are also those with electricity and those without electricity. So, this differs from scenario to scenario, but we are prioritising everyone who is severely affected by the winds,” says Kheswa.
