SAHRC to hold inquiry over #VaalRiverPollution: PICTURE GALLERY─── 16:45 Mon, 03 Sep 2018
Roleplayers who have allegedly been linked with the contamination of the Vaal River that spills over into the Vaal Dam are set to be given a rap on the knuckles in a formal inquiry by the South African Human Rights Commission.
The commission’s Gauteng spokesperson, Buang Jones, made this remark after its oversight inspection on Monday to assess the state of the dam following allegations that the Emfuleni municipality was neglecting the dam.
Jones says roleplayers linked to this, such as Sasol, amongst others, will have to come and explain themselves in front of an inquiry. Allegations are that this ultimately threatens people’s lives.
During today’s inspection, the Commission says it was bothered by what it had found, raw sewage could be seen flowing right into the Vaal River.
Jones says this borders on a human rights violation and they wanted to see the credence of these allegations.
