Grandmother talks about Pitt Bull tragedy | News Article
Leah Smartryk

The two-year-old toddler who was killed by a Pit Bull Terrier, will be buried on Friday morning at the Lewende Woord Kerk in Faan Ferreiralaan in Bloemfontein.

OFM News visited the house where the incident took place and spoke to the grandmother, Amelia Steyn. She told OFM News it is almost as if this was meant to happen. She says on the day of the incident the little girl’s curly blonde hair was the most beautiful it ever was and she was so content. The sad grandmother of little Leah said it was as if this little toddler knew she only had two years to live because she lived her life to the fullest.

The completely grief-stricken grandmother told OFM News little Leah told her father that she loves him and greeted him just before she left to play outside. They did not know this would be the last time.

This comes after Former Mayor of Mangaung Papi Mokoena's seven-month-old dog mauled the two-year-old. Leah Smartryk allegedly peeped over the wall, and the dog grabbed her and pulled her over.

According to Steyn, Leah was playing outside. When her mother went looking for her she could not find her. Steyn tells OFM News something told Leah’s mother to run to the corner and look over the wall. She saw the body of her little girl lying lifeless on the ground. Steyn explains that the Pit Bulls in the cage stood watching as if they were ashamed. The mother fearlessly jumped over the wall to fetch the lifeless body of her kid.

Steyn told OFM News she does not want to seek revenge. She just wants Leah's name to be honoured. The grandmother will remember Leah as a busy little girl who lived life to the fullest.

Some family members do, however, want to decide about what steps to take once Leah has been laid to rest.

She said that nothing can compare to the pain that the family is currently feeling and that they just want to remember Leah as the God-sent child that she was.
