Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality elects new leaders─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 17:19 Thu, 14 Jun 2018
The Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality in the Free State has elected a new executive mayor, council chief whip, and speaker.
Gillbert Mokotso now takes the reigns as the executive mayor of the municipality. The position become vacant after the ANC in the province recalled Vusi Tshabalala following several tabled motions of no confidence against him and violent protests calling for his resignation.
The special council sitting held today was the last chance to appoint the mayor, failing of which would result in the municipality being dissolved. Processes to fill these positions have in the previous months been disrupted several times when council sittings were disrupted by protesting community members.
DA’s councillor in the municipality, Metsing Mpakathe, told OFM News they accept the elected mayors as they are reportedly not Tshabalala’s cronies.
Malewatle Nthedi was elected as the Speaker, while Danger Moloi takes the Chief Whip position.
The municipality will now be expected to adopt its 2018/19 budget before the end of the month.
