The embattled North West Premier, Supra Mahumapelo, is retiring from his premiership position. He has just made the announcement at a media briefing organised by the ANC at Luthuli House following their meeting on Monday.
His decision comes soon after President Cyril Ramaphosa placed the entire province under administration. Mahumapelo previously refused to resign and instead took a leave of absence despite the party’s top structures’ decision and violent protests that erupted in the province calling for his resignation.
Mahumapelo has been embroiled in a number of corruption allegations, including the much-publicised Mediosa scandal, where it is alleged that the suspended Head of the Health Department, Thabo Lekalakala, under his watch made a R30 million upfront payment to this Gupta-linked company.
