Community protest action has spilt over to Bothaville in the Free State.

Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, told OFM News ten men were arrested yesterday and are expected to appear in the Local Magistrate's Court on charges of public violence and malicious damage to property.

Some community members took to the streets of Kgotsong on Sunday. They are allegedly dissatisfied with the Nala Municipality's poor service delivery. Thakeng says damage was caused to property.

The protests started after community members attended a gathering in a local community hall on Sunday at about 11:00. Shortly after the meeting, roads in the area were blocked with burning tyres, stones and rubbish.

He says members of the police’s Public Order monitored the situation and no other incidents were reported.

Yesterday, however, the protest continued. Roads were blocked with burning tyres while some municipal trailers were set alight. A total of six shops belonging to foreign nationals were looted while one shop burnt.

The suspects who were arrested yesterday are aged between 16 and 35.

According to Thakeng, the situation remained tense until early this morning and a strong police presence remains in the area.
