Bloemfontein evictions become heated as belongings are piled in mud─── JOSCA HUMAN 12:55 Wed, 04 Apr 2018
Residents at the Brandwag flats in Bloemfontein in the Free State are currently being evicted from their homes, with tempers flaring and scuffles breaking out between police and residents.
OFM News spoke to one of the residents who is being evicted, who says they have no where to go. He says a member from the Free State Social Housing Company (FRESHCO) which manages the flats, came knocking on their doors at 5am this morning, telling all residents that they needed to be out.
OFM reports from the scene residents are standing around outside helplessly, as their furniture and possessions are lying outside in the mud. The doors to the flats are also being welded shut to avoid re-entry. Police are on the scene, seeing as people are very unhappy.
A resident, Sonya Pelser, says after numerous court battles regarding their lease agreements, today's apparent unannounced eviction is illegal. She says they have been to court twice regarding their right to stay in the building, and they won both times.
"Today's eviction is actually very illegal, because there has been no eviction letter," says Pelser, adding they were evicted once previously already.
OFM News is yet to receive official comment from authorities regarding the situation.
