An emotional Peter Frederiksen stood up in the Free State High Court today to apologise to his family members in both Lesotho and Denmark and the South African community at large.

Frederiksen was handed two life sentences by judge JP Daffue after he was found guilty earlier on 36 charges against him. Frederiksen was arrested in September 2015 after female body parts were found at his Langenhoven Park home. Daffue said in his judgment that Frederiksen should be removed from society and that women, and children especially, should be protected against people like Frederiksen. He also described Frederiksen as charming and able to manipulate anyone. Frederiksen’s lawyer, Marius Bruwer, said that they would like to appeal at a later stage.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authorities’ (NPA) Free State spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, welcomed the judgment. “Frederiksen was handed two life sentences on the charges related to conspiracy to murder his late wife Tshidi Molise and the rape of a minor. His name was also added to the Register of sexual offenders. Daffue was also satisfied that Frederiksen’s children will be well taken care of. Daffue further stated that Fredriksen’s family members wanted nothing to do with him and would not support him if he had to be released from jail. Frederiksen said his family in Denmark has been moved by media. He hopes it’s finished now.

“Since the start of the trial we were of the view that the only appropriate sentence would be life in prison. Considering that there was a child involved and also a family in Lesotho that lost a family member. We hope they find peace now that they know the accused has been removed from society,” says Shuping.
