Eskom’s spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, says they are pleased with the Free State Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) for taking action at the financially troubled Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality.

This after the department placed the municipality under administration earlier this month. Phasiwe says the municipality owes them approximately R2.6 billion, which is the highest debt of any municipality in the country. He says they are hopeful that measures by the department and the Free State Government will help the municipality settle all their debts.

The municipality also owes more than R200 million to the water board.

The power utility started interrupting the power supply to Tokologo Municipality today and said Maluti-A-Phofung and Matjhabeng Municipalities are next on their list.

The South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) in the Free State told OFM News that placing Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality under administration is a step in the right direction after the municipality has failed to deliver services, pay employees their salaries, pay pension fund and medical aid contributions, and other third parties.

The Union’s Provincial Secretary, Thabang Tseuoa, said although they welcome this they are still of the view that the municipality should be dissolved.
