No mass escape of prisoners at Grootvlei─── 18:31 Sat, 28 Oct 2017
Bloemfontein - Whatsapp messages and Facebook posts doing the rounds that a mass escape of 29 offenders has occurred at the Grootvlei Correctional Centre outside Bloemfontein is incorrect and untrue.
Gustav Wilson, Regional Head: Development and Care, of the Department of Correctional Services in the Free State and Northern Cape, told Bloemfontein Courant that he wanted to set the record straight after the messages started circulating on social media this morning.
“It can be confirmed that there has been indeed an escape of two offenders from Grootvlei. However, one offender has already been apprehended and is back in custody, while the Police are following up strong leads on the second offender and it is hoped that he will also be rearrested soon,” Wilson told the newspaper.
Acting Regional Commissioner, Ben Nyapotse, is monitoring the situation and will update the public on the situation.
