Roaming lion spotted near Winburg─── 12:46 Thu, 15 Dec 2016
Winburg - A lion has been spotted by Emergency Medical Services staff members near the Correctional Service Centre between Winburg and Makelaketla in the Free State.
The lion was spotted this morning around 05:30 while EMS was on work duties. It is reported that the lion disappeared shortly after the EMS staff spotted it.
According to provincial Health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, EMS are working closely with police services to locate the lion. It is believed that the lion escaped from one of the lion farms around Winburg, however, no missing lion has yet been reported.
Mvambi urges all members of the community who have spotted the lion to come forward with the information. Mvambi said since the spotting of the animal, the police have not yet updated him and he’s unsure of whether it has been found or not.
Winburg police spokesperson, Malebo Khosana could not comment on the matter as no case has been opened in this regard.
"We have alerted all the game farm owners so they are on the look out as to whether they have any missing lions in their den. We have tried to alert the community members in the area and the police are on the lookout," Khosana says.
