Sixty arrested on NWU Mafikeng Campus | News Article

Mahikeng - A total of 60 people were arrested at the North West University's Mafikeng Campus yesterday following various violent clashes between protesters and the police.

NWU spokesperson, Louis Jacobs, says due to the volatile situation on the campus, police presence was increased. Staff members were requested to leave the campus for their own safety.

Management’s first priority yesterday was to secure buildings to prevent major damage. This was achieved with the assistance of security forces. As a result, only minor damage was caused in the form of broken windows of buildings. There were also unsuccessful attempts of arson.

Jacobs says private vehicles parked on the campus were slightly damaged as a result of students pelting police with stones. According to him, it cannot be confirmed if all of those arrested for public violence are students.

Management has taken no formal decision yet to suspend classes on the campus. Jacobs says as the day progresses a decision will be taken. The current situation on the campus is calm.
