Dean Burmester claims Joburg Open win | News Article

Dean Burmester claimed a win today in the Joburg Open as he played a brilliant bogey-free round of 64, securing a three-shot victory on home soil this weekend claiming a R3.48m winner’s cheque.

The defending champion, Dan Bradbury of England finished in third with a strong final round of  64 (-6) while South Africa’s Darren Fichardt finished in second also with a score of 64.

The Joburg Open is the first of three consecutive co-sanctioned events between the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour that will be played in South Africa and this weekend saw good results from South Africa’s own as Dean Burmester lead the charges today.

Thriston Lawrence also got off to a good start today after a successful round 3 yesterday allowing him to start today with a three-shot lead taken into the final round of the Joburg Open. Lawrence looked to lift the trophy in Johannesburg for the second time in three years but this year saw Burmester lift the trophy making it his third on the DP World Tour.

Burmester started the day three shots off top spot but took the lead on the fifth to finish the week at 18 under. He fought hard to overtake Lawrence who had a three shot lead.

DP World tour reports that Dean Burmester couldn’t fully describe the final saying, "I actually can't describe what's really happened.”

"The fans are always fantastic at home in South Africa and I'm so happy to be home and playing at home and eating a bit of braai meat and having a good time.”

He went on to comment on managing to surpass Lawrence’s lead, "Thriston is an amazing competitor and he had a three-shot lead so I knew I had to do something special and fortunately I was able to do that," he said.

This weekend’s top three, Burmester, Fichardt and Bradbury,  have qualified for the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon via the Qualifying Series.
