Excited Lombard geared for 'Africa's Major'─── MORGAN PIEK 08:34 Wed, 08 Nov 2023
“I gained a lot from that week in terms of how to deal with that pressure and how to entertain the fans while still focusing on your golf.”
The South African professional Zander Lombard looks forward to teeing it up at the 2023 Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City.
The 40th edition of ‘Africa’s Major’ has once again attracted a star-studded field ahead of next week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
These include the two-time champions Tommy Fleetwood, as well as the Major winners Justin Rose, Francesco Molinari and Justin Thomas, and Ryder Cup stars Max Homa and Nicolai Højgaard.
Lombard, who earned his Sunshine Tour card in Bloemfontein, said it’s special to play in the iconic tournament.
“A few years ago it was just so special playing with Ernie Els and Lee Westwood,” said Lombard.
“I gained a lot from that week in terms of how to deal with that pressure and how to entertain the fans while still focusing on your golf.
“I’ve matured a lot in the two years since then and I’m looking forward to the challenge this week.
“I’m currently 30th on the Race to Dubai Rankings and I’ve had a solid season. I went a bit quiet during the middle of the season, but the start and the finish of it has been strong.
“My game and my head is in a good place. I’m just really looking forward to putting a good score together this week. I’ve got nothing to lose and will just play my best.”
Lombard has been group with Nathan Kimsey and Adrian Otaegui of Spain for the opening round.
The Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club tees off on Thursday.
