Is TikTok the new Google?─── CASEY-LEE ANTHONY 08:11 Tue, 12 Nov 2024
We usually turn to Google when looking for information or answers to questions. But nowadays, with so much content, would we rather be turning to TikTok?
Over 17 million South Africans have a TikTok account, with most users being viewers, not creators.
Many professionals are utilising the platform creating content to inform. However, we should be very wary of misinformation.
Why do we trust TikTok as a source of information?
- Unfiltered reaction: When wanting to try out a new restaurant, for example, one gets real reviews from people who’ve eaten there which could inform your decision.
- Homemade recipes: Usually when Googling recipes we’re presented with long lists of what to do. TikTok, on the other hand, makes it easier and most creators add videos, making it much easier to try something new.

It’s no secret people are leaning towards visual content rather than text, and right now TikTok seems to be tops.
However, it’s important to remain vigilant and not believe everything seen on the platform.
In recent years, a South African claimed to be a qualified doctor and gave health advice to followers and viewers on TikTok. The imposter was arrested following an investigation into false claims of being a qualified and licenced medical doctor.
Tips to avoid false news and misinformation online:
Check the source, if you’re getting information from social media platforms make sure you find a different source, preferably the original source. Unlike with Google, it’s often difficult to locate an original source of information circulated on TikTok.
It’s very important to report any content you deem potentially dangerous or harmful to users of any online platform.
