The former Dolphins assistant coach steps into the role following Mark Charlton’s departure to join the Warriors for the 2024/25 domestic season.

Mbatha, who holds a Cricket South Africa (CSA) Level 4 coaching qualification, has steadily built a strong reputation in South African cricketing circles. As a former South African Schools representative, he made a seamless transition from player to coach, cutting his teeth at youth level before heading up the Dolphins Academy.

His coaching career has been marked by a commitment to development and a deep understanding of the local cricketing landscape.

While acknowledging the magnitude of the role, Mbatha expressed his excitement at taking the next big step in his career.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be appointed head coach of the Northern Cape Heat,” said Mbatha.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Dolphins Cricket for the opportunities that have shaped my growth, and I want to thank the interim coach for their leadership during the past season.

“I’m really looking forward to this new chapter. It’s a chance to contribute meaningfully to Northern Cape cricket, and I’m thrilled to be joining the Heat family as we work towards future success.”

Mbatha takes over from Deon Carolus, who served as the Heat’s interim head coach during the 2024/25 season.
