Proteas wary of dangerous Sri Lanka─── MORGAN PIEK 07:08 Tue, 26 Nov 2024
“Look, we all know what the bigger picture is, but the beauty of this team is that we've taken it one step at a time, and I think that's been a blessing in disguise.”
The Proteas head into the first Test against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, Durban, with quiet confidence, despite the challenges posed by the weather forecast. The two-match series is effectively a quarter-final in the World Test Championship and South Africa is eager to make it count.
Rain is predicted in Durban this week, which could complicate the proceedings. Nevertheless, the Proteas are focused and prepared for the task ahead.
Spinner Keshav Maharaj told OFM Sport that it’s important to keeping staying in the moment and fighting for each ball as opposed to look too far ahead.
“Look, we all know what the bigger picture is, but the beauty of this team is that we've taken it one step at a time, and I think that's been a blessing in disguise,” said Maharaj.
“That’s the approach we need to continue—focusing on winning every single ball we play in this Test match. That mindset will take us where we want to be.”
Maharaj acknowledged the challenge posed by an in-form Sri Lankan team, currently ranked third in the WTC standings. He stressed the importance of maintaining focus on their own game plan.
“Yeah, I think they’ve done really well over the last six months since Sanath Jayasuriya took over. He’s clearly shifted their mindset. Kamindu Mendis has been phenomenal—he’s scored four or five Test hundreds in recent innings.

“They also have experienced players like Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, who will undoubtedly draw on their experience to inspire the team. But for us, it’s all about sticking to our plans as a bowling group and making improvements where needed.”
Play at Kingsmead is scheduled to begin at 9:30 on Wednesday.
