India firmly on top against Australia in first Test─── ILSE SMALBERGER 13:09 Sun, 24 Nov 2024
Australia need 534 runs to win the first Test against India in a scorching Perth. India declared their second innings at 487-6 late on day three.
Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal struck 161 before finally succumbing to Mitch Marsh (caught by Steve Smith). It was his fourth Test century and first in Australia.
Virat Kohli scored a magnificent 100 not out, having last scored a Test century in July 2023. This was Kohli’s 30th Test ton.
Ozzie spinner Nathan Lyon was the only multiple wicket-taker for the hosts with 2-96 off 39 overs. Australia had to stand firm for 24 minutes before the end of the day’s play.

Opening batsmen Nathan McSweeny and Usman Khawaja were given the task to steer Australia safely to the end of play. However, Indian stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah struck early, trapping McSweeney before the wicket for a duck.
Australia captain Pat Cummins was sent in as nightwatchman but edged Mohammed Siraj to second slip and was expertly caught by Virat Kohli for only two runs. Bumrah struck again in the third over – this time trapping Marnus Labuschagne lbw on three. Australia could finally retire to the dressing room but is staggering on 12 for three.
The hosts either have to bat out for a draw or chase down a record total to win the match. The current highest successful fourth-innings total to win a match is the 418-7 made by West Indies against Australia at St John's in May 2003.
