India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, star batsman Virat Kohli and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja all announced their retirement from T20 internationals after the team’s victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup.
The 35-year old Kohli, who produced a match-winning knock of 76, was also named Player of the Match.
Kohli retires from the format with 4,188 runs, scored in 125 T20 internationals. His tally is second only to Sharma’s 4,231 from 159 matches, which include a record five hundreds.
An emotional Kohli told the crowd that it was time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward.
Addressing a press conference later, Sharma said there was no better time to say goodbye to this format, than with a win in the final.
“I’ve loved every moment of this,” he said.
Both men will continue to play test and 50-overs cricket for India.
Jadeja announced his retirement on his Instagram account on Sunday. He retires after 74 T20 international appearances, including every match in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.
