The Proteas took on the Netherlands on Sunday morning, the 6th of November, in a make-or-break game that saw them finish with a surprise exit from the T20 World Cup. The Netherlands sent South Africa crashing in Adelaide with a shocking 13run win.

Head Coach Mark Boucher said South Africa deserved better after a disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup saying they only had themselves to blame after their 13-run loss.

Boucher stated "It's disappointing to have an exit like this with this particular squad because I believe we deserve better as a squad. We've got ourselves to blame, but yeah, I think our T20 side is in a good position.”

A win today would've secured the Proteas their spot in the semi-finals but their loss sent India through instead and Pakistan and Bangladesh were left to fight it out for the remaining semi-finals position. Pakistan went on to stun Bangladesh with a 5-wicket win to secure their position.

The Netherlands won the toss and chose to bat first leading to their score of 158/4 in their 20 allotted overs. Colin Ackermann’s 41 not out from 26 balls was a large contributor to their stunning win and also showed Ackermann deserving of the man of the match title.

The Proteas started their batting campaign strong but couldn’t make the necessary 159 runs which would secure their win. Unfortunately their game ended on 145/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

This leaves South Africa with a disappointing exit from the World Cup and an unfortunate end to Mark Boucher’s time as head coach. Cricket SA has announced that Malibongwe Maketa has been named as the interim Proteas coach and will be in charge of the Proteas during their three-test tour of Australia next month.
