Learners and staff at the GJ Podile Primary School in Mahikeng are receiving psychosocial support following the death of a Grade 3 learner who allegedly consumed items from a local spaza shop.

According to initial reports, the Grade 3 learner arrived at school feeling unwell, accompanied by a sibling in Grade 5, on Friday (11/4). Shortly after arriving, both children began showing signs of illness. The school immediately arranged emergency medical assistance.

The siblings were rushed to Mahikeng Provincial Hospital. The younger child was declared dead on arrival, while the Grade 5 learner remains in the ICU, said North West Education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane.

“While the exact cause of their condition has not yet been confirmed, preliminary information from the surviving learner suggests they had eaten snacks bought from a local shop the day before,” he said.

He added that the department is awaiting the results of medical and toxicology tests to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Education MEC Viola Motsumi expressed her sorrow. “We are devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of our young Grade 3 learner. No parent should ever have to endure the pain of losing a child, especially under such distressing circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this immense grief.”

“We also continue to hope for the full recovery of the surviving sibling and pledge our continued support to the family and the school community,” she added.

Molokwane confirmed a team of psychosocial support professionals has been dispatched to the school. The team is providing trauma counselling to learners, teachers, and affected families to help them cope with the emotional impact of the incident.
