Severe weather warning for Central South Africa─── ZENANDE MPAME 10:37 Mon, 17 Mar 2025

A yellow level two warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms over parts of Central South Africa on Monday (17/3), resulting in heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and lightning.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned severe thunderstorms may affect the Free State, Northern Cape, and North West until midnight.
Potential impacts include:
- Localised damage to infrastructure, vehicles, and livestock.
- Disruptions to power supply and essential services.
- Localised flooding on roads, bridges, and low-lying areas.
- Agricultural losses due to excessive rain.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, said while the rainfall is much needed, residents must take precautions to avoid flooding and other risks.
“We urge all South Africans to be extremely cautious in bad weather. Heavy rain increases the risk of localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas, bridges, and roads,” he said.

The Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads, and Transport has advised the public to:
- avoid crossing flooded areas, especially rivers and low-water bridges;
- do not attempt to walk or drive through fast-moving water; and
- find alternative routes and wait for water levels to drop before proceeding.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Centre has declared a national disaster following extreme weather conditions in the Free State, North West, and Gauteng.
This allows the government to allocate emergency funds to affected areas.
Arrive Alive safety tips for driving in heavy rain:
- Give yourself extra travel time.
- Adjust your speed to match conditions.
- Ensure headlights are on.
- Brake earlier and more cautiously.
- Avoid standing water on roads.
