Vaal University of Technology principal welcomes SIU investigation─── ZENANDE MPAME 09:00 Thu, 21 Nov 2024
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is looking into allegations of maladministration, factionalism, and corruption relating to services provided to the Vaal University of Technology (VUT).
It must be determined whether the contracting of goods and services to the university was done in a manner that was fair, transparent, cost-effective, and in line with the legislation manuals issued by the National Treasury.
The order covers allegations of unlawful and improper conduct that occurred between January 2016 and Friday, 8 November 2024, as well as any related activities before 1 January 2016 and after the date of the order that are relevant to the matter under investigation.
“The SIU investigation is a step towards restoring VUT’s legacy and reputation as a centre of excellence in higher education,” said VUT’S vice-chancellor and principal Professor Khehla Ndlovu.
“This investigation is not only welcomed but encouraged, it aligns with our unwavering commitment to rooting out any form of corruption or malpractice that has compromised our university.”
We call upon all members of our community to fully support and cooperate with the SIU as it embarks on this mission because we owe it to our community to provide an environment where ethical leadership and good governance are not just ideals but practices, he said.
ActionSA Emfuleni youth forum welcomed the action to investigate procurement irregularities and maladministration at VUT. “This move represents a necessary step towards ensuring accountability and good governance at public institutions,” said Youth media officer Mologadi Modiba.
“This investigation must not be a mere formality, but a clear signal that the South African government is committed to fighting corruption and promoting transparency in all public institutions.”
IOL reports the former higher education and training minister dr Naledi Pandor appointed independent assessors in 2019 who confirmed that leadership, governance, and management at VUT were in such a state of collapse the institution needed to be placed under administration.
“The university will be taking proactive measures to strengthen internal controls and review its policies on staff appointments and procurement processes. Together, we will establish a renewed VUT a university that not only provides quality education but also embodies the principles of fairness, integrity, and accountability,” said Ndlovu.
