The Matjhabeng Municipality has committed to reviewing and strengthening safety protocols at construction sites after the drowning of two children in Thabong.

Acting Mayor Hlobohang Mokhomo, joined by councillors, representatives from Vaal Central Water and the project contractor, Oarabile Plant and Hire, visited the grieving families on Monday (11/11) to offer condolences and support.

Loyiso Mkhekwa (11) and Rapelang Sejentu (10) fell into a water-filled trench near Setshabelo School on Sunday. Heavy rains had left the construction site submerged. It forms part of a sewerage network repair project under the department of water and sanitation’s ministerial intervention programme.

During the visit, Mokhomo expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved families, describing the loss as not only devastating for the families but for the broader community. “These children represented innocence and the promise of a bright future, a future we now mourn.”

The mayor pledged the Welkom-based municipality’s support, assigning a team to work closely with the ward councillor and families to assist with funeral arrangements. He also emphasised the need for psychological counselling services to help the families cope with their profound loss.

Vaal Central Water spokesperson, Lindiwe Mguni, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to safety protocols while calling on the community to exercise caution around construction zones, particularly after heavy rainfall. The contractor, Oarabile Plant and Hire, would be investigated to ensure accountability and identify measures to prevent future tragedies.

Free State police meanwhile said investigations are ongoing.
